Boot your Computer Faster
2.A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled, but on some systems it is not, so below is the information on how to turn it on:
Go to Start Menu and Click Run
Type in regedit then click ok
Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction"
Select "Enable" from the list on the right
Right on it and select "Modify"
Change the value to Y .
Reboot your Pc and see the change yourself.
Changing Manufacturer Icon in System Properties
Recently a friend of mine did asked me how to change the manufacturer icon and supported by text in System Properties. Even though, I have changed the Boot Screens and Welcome screen languages when I was at my earlier employer I forgot how to achieve this. :-) Then after some trying I found the way and thought it is better to blog it. 1. You have to create an icon to be shown as the manufacturer logo. Also remember that even though how large your image, System Properties will only show 180x114 pixels. * The point is that the image you create should be 180x114 pixels to be shown as a whole. 2. Create an ini file to hold the Manufacturer, Model and Support Information. Open notepad and create a file in the following structure. [General] Manufacturer= Arjuna Model= My Model [Support Information] line1= Tele xxx - xxxxxx line2= Fax ### - ###### line3= EMail ME@MyCompany.Com line4= What ever you want When saving you have to save this file as OEMInfo.ini. 3. Ok, since now files are ready, you have to copy them to system32 folder inside windows installation folder. The default location would be C:\WINDOWS\system32. Job well done !, now if you go on to System Properties you will see the image that you have just created with the information that you have just saved in the notepad.
IMPROVE XP SHUTDOWN SPEED
This tweak reduces the time XP waits before automatically closing any running programs when you give it the command to shutdown.
Go to Start then select Run
Type 'Regedit' and click ok
Find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\'
Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'
Now select 'HungAppTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'
Automatic Shutdown
1. Right click on desktop>select New>shortcut
2. In the shortcut window type : shutdown -s -t 60 -c "the message you want to display"
3. Select Next
4. Name it anything
Now, double click it !
Scared ???
Nothing happened !
Remedy :
1. Go to start>Run
2. Type : shutdown -a
3. Hit Enter

Block or unblock Website
* Open the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc* There you will find a file named HOSTS
* Click on the file and press SHIFT and now right click on it .* From the right click menu select Open with .
* Now, select Notepad to open the file from the list !* Now, in the file under the line 127.0.0.1 localhost add another line as 127.0.0.2 www.xyz.com.
* Now, File>>Save !
Now, open your web browser and try openning www.xyz.com , it will not load !
To unblock sites just do the opposite !
Enable Task Manager
1.Click Start
Click Run
Enter gpedit.msc in the Open box and click OK
In the Group Policy settings window:
Select User Configuration
Select Administrative Templates
Select System
Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options
Select Remove Task Manager
Double-click the Remove Task Manager option
2.You can also right click on your taskbar (the blue bar at the bottom). If that and ctr alt dlt do not work... Well, i had to install windows xp all over again
3.you have more than one way to do this- but both work
1) hold down all these keys at the same time Ctrl+Alt+Del

Try these tips :
1. Use Of '+' sign :
This ensures that the results returned to you will definatly consist of the word following the '+' sign. For Eg :

To get the definition of a word just use :

7. Search for exact phrase :
To search a set of words exactly together i.e.
For Eg :
Search: "contact us"
This will return the results containing both contact and us together !
8. Using the wild card '*' :
The * sign can be used in places where the whole word is not known.
For Eg:
Search: friend*
This will return the results containing friend , friends , friendship.
9. Using the '?' sign :
This is used when the full spelling of the word is not known.
For Eg:
Search: fri??d
This will result that in the results in which any alphabet can take the place of '?' sign.
10. Use of boolean operators :
The boolean operators like AND,OR,NOT can be used in search box to connect the words !
The search engine understands them as what they mean but the must be in capital letters !
For Eg:
Search: swim OR float
This will return the results containing either swim or float !

Hibernate ur XP
Trick Advantage :
You can leave your work in between and shutdown the PC and resume it next time as it is !

When you want to stop your work and shutdown(Keeping your programs open)
Do The Following :
1. Click start>Turn Off Computer
2. As the Turn Off menu comes up press 'Shift' and 'Stand By' changes to 'Hibernate'
3. Click Hibernate (Shift Kept Pressed)
Your xp will save the work and shutdown !
Now, when you switch it on again it will resume it again !
No loading of windows will take place and you will be resumed to your work as if you had just switched your monitor off and now on again !

Lock and Unlock folders
You can lock and unlock your folder with this simple trick !
Procedure :
1. Make a folder on the desktop and name it as "folder"
2. Now, open notepad and write ren folder folder.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} and now (Notepad Menu) File>save as.
3. In the 'save as' name it as lock.bat and click save ! (Save it on Desktop)
4. Now, again open notepad again and write ren folder.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} folder and now (Notepad Menu) File>save as.
5. In the 'save as' name it as key.bat and click save ! (Save it on Desktop)
6. Now, double click lock.bat to lock the folder and now if you open your folder, control panel will open up !
7. Now, double click key.bat to open the folder and now if you open your folder, you can access your data inside the folder again !
8. Lock your folder and hide the key.bat somewhere else on your hard disk !
9. Whenever you want to open your folder just paste the key.bat on desktop and open your folder using it !

Bios Password
Forgot BIOS Password ?
Do the following :
1. Open the CPU
2. Now, observe the motherboard.
3. You notice a coin like silver Battery(3V).

This battery is 24 x 7 power supply for the BIOS, which is used to run the system clock will the main power is off. It also initiates the booting process when power is switched on.

5. Wait 30 seconds and place the battery back on the motherboard.

To Change Your Name IN AM nd PM
Hi freinds !
I m here to tell u a trick to add up ur name in place of AM and PM beside time and make urself to feel proud among ur group of frnds.
Its simple
Start -> Control Pannel -> Regional and LAnguage option -> Customize (beside English US) -> Go to TIME tab -> Change AM symbol and PM symbol from AM and PM to ur name -> Apply -> Ok ...
IS it changed ??? Might be not ...Now go to time in taskbar and Double Click it to open "Date and time property" ...Look place where time chnges in digital form i.e. 02:47:52 AM , click to arrow to cnage the AM or PM by selecting and press arrow. Thumb.db is is a cache of the current picture in that directory.to remove it go for following
step1 > open "WINDOWS EXPLORER".
2>go to "TOOLS".
3>open "FOLDER OPTIONS".
4>go to "VIEW".
5>see 1st section "FILES & FOLDERS".
6>click on the "DO NOT CACHE THUMBNAILS".
now the thumbnail file will be removed from ur computer once u do this the file will be never created.
Clean out the prefetch folder :
Windows XP uses a system called 'prefetch' to organize and preload some of the data necessary for commonly used applications and files. A folder called prefetch is used to store the information the operating system needs to carry out this operation.
After several months of use, the prefetch folder may become quite overloaded with older references to software and files that may no longer be in use.It's a good idea to manually empty the older files out of the prefetch folder every few months or so.
To do this: Navigate to 'c:\windows\prefetch' and delete all .
PF files that are older than a week or two.
Keeping the Windows XP Core in the RAM
If you have 512 MB or more of RAM, you can increase system performance by having the Windows XP 'Core' kept in the RAM instead of paged on the hard disk.
Go to Start -> Run - Type regedit and press enter - On the left hand side tree, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\
- On the list on the right side, look for an entry called 'DisablePagingExecutive'
- Double click it
- Press 1 on your keyboard
- Click OK
- Exit regedit and reboot the computer
To revert to the default setting, follow the same steps as above, but this time, press 0(zero) instead of 1 on the keyboard.
Recover the lost administrators password in Windows XP
Slightly more work needed if you lose or forget the Windows XP administrator password.
1.First reboot Windows XP in safe mode by re-starting the computer and pressing F8 repeated as the computer starts up.
2.Then (in safe mode) click Start and then click Run. In the open box type "control userpasswords2" without the quotes - I have just used quotes to differentiate what you have to type.
3.You will now have access to all the user accounts, including the administrators account and will be able to reset the lost password.
4.Just click the administrators user account, and then click Reset Password.
5.You will need to add a new password in the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and confirm by clicking OK.
All done, you have recovered the lost adminitrators password!
How to find the IP address of the sender in Yahoo! mail

For that, you would need to find the IP address of the sender. The tutorial below can help you find the IP address of the sender. Finding IP address in Yahoo! Mail
1. Log into your Yahoo! mail with your username and password.
2. Click on Inbox or whichever folder you have stored your mail.
3. Open the mail.
4. If you do not see the headers above the mail message, your headers are not displayed. To display the headers,
* Click on Options on the top-right corner
* In the Mail Options page, click on General Preferences
* Scroll down to Messages where you have the Headers option
* Make sure that Show all headers on incoming messages is selected
* Click on the Save button
* Go back to the mails and open that mail.
5. You should see similar headers like this:Yahoo! headers : nameLook for Received: from followed by the IP address between square brackets [ ]. Here, it is 202.65.138.109.That is be the IP address of the sender!

7. Or else if you have headers like thisHotmail headers : nameLook for Received: from followed by IP address within square brackets[].In this case, the IP address of the sender is [61.83.145.129] (Spam mail). Jump to step 9.
8. * If you have multiple Received: from headers, eliminate the ones that have proxy.anyknownserver.com.
9. Track the IP address of the sender

(2)Cool DOS Commands
Command #1: By typing in 'tree' into Dos, you can view all of the folders (not files) on the computer or User. Pretty cool but then again pretty worthless. Just a cool thing to know.
Command #2: By typing in 'ipconfig' you can view your default gateway ip adress for your router. This is really only useful if you are good with the computer and are trying to fix your internet connection, you can look at what's wrong.
Command #3: By typing in 'format c:' you can delete all the information on your hard drive, if you want to start new or something, but dont do that just to be an idiot.
Command #4: By typing in 'netstat' or 'nbtstat' (both similar) you can view the TCP/IP(3)Renaming the Recycle Bin
Ever wanted to rename your recycle bin? Who wouldn't?
Well, it's pretty simple, the bare bones of it are just typing in commands to the registry.
Ok, what you do is, copy this information (in bold) to notepad or something similar. (Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Notepad).
